Contrary to the general opinion, Van Persie believes England played reasonably well against Uruguay and their star man was unlucky to score just one goal.

Rooney was criticized heavily after England’s opening game defeat against Italy but he was spared by critics after the Uruguay defeat as he put in lot of efforts during the game while also scoring the equalizer.

Costa Rica’s shock 1-0 win over Italy on Friday relegated England out of the World Cup after the Three Lions lost their first two games.

“I watched most of the game against Italy and the whole game against Uruguay, and I think it is a shame. England played quite well and were so unlucky,” Van Persie said.

“Wayne worked his socks off, played very well and could have scored four goals so I don’t think he is to blame,” he added.

Van Persie also revealed that Rooney was one of the reasons why he joined Manchester United from Arsenal, adding that the England forward is a world class player.

“Wayne is a great player. As I’ve said many times, Wayne was partly the reason I came to Manchester United,” Van Persie said.

“I never regretted saying that because by training and playing with him he’s shown me that he’s a world class player. He’s a great player and a great goalscorer,” he added.

“He is always under massive pressure and that has been his life since he made his debut. He hit an unbelievable free-kick, had a good shot saved by the keeper, a header which hit the bar and he scored a goal. He’s not to blame, he gave his all for his country. It’s not fair to criticise him so much,” he further said.

Netherlands, who have already qualified for the knockout round in the World Cup, will face Chile on Monday in a Group B match.

The Dutch will have to work hard for the draw if they need to finish top in the group because of their superior goal difference.
