Varun will reportedly hold a roadshow before he files his nomination papers. He is contesting against Congress nominee Amita Singh, the wife of Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, who had won from the seat in 2009.

Varun’s estranged cousin Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had earlier this week said that he had chosen a ‘wrong path’.

"He is definitely from my family, he is my brother. But he has gone astray. When a young one in the family chooses the wrong path, then the elders show them the right path, the right way. I urge all of you to show my brother the right path," Priyanka had said while addressing Congress workers in Varun Gandhi's constituency.

Maneka Gandhi hit out at Priyanka’s remarks, saying the country will decide who has gone on the wrong path.

"If he has gone astray while serving the country, the country will decide," she said when asked for her reaction about Priyanka's comment.

Varun had earlier praised the work done by his cousin and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi to empower people in Amethi.
His praise raised many eyebrows and the BJP leader had to give a clarification on Twitter later.

"My comment in a meeting with teachers and NGOs, in response to being asked whether I knew about initiatives in Amethi, was that although I had not seen the work done via self help groups in Amethi, I had heard it was fairly decent, and that I would stress on empowering people towards being self-reliant. It should not be seen as an endorsement of any political party or candidate," Varun wrote on the microblogging website.

Maneka had then cautioned her son, advising him to use ‘his mind instead of heart’ while making statements.

Varun had contested the last Lok Sabha elections from Pilibhit and won by over three lakh votes. After shifting to Sultanpur seat, he has been reaching out to the people telling them that Sultanpur was the 'karmbhoomi" of his late father Sanjay Gandhi.
