New Delhi: Tightening the noose on car lifters, the Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered to put high-security number plates on the vehicles till April 30.

The deadline fixed for the new vehicles in Delhi to sport high security number plates is April 30 and for the old vehicles it is June 15.

The hi-tech plates are tamper-proof and according to officials, will help in curbing vehicle theft and tracking stolen vehicles. Though the Centre conceived the scheme a decade ago, most of the states have so far ignored it.

A bench of Justice SH Kapadia, Justice AK Patnaik and Justice Swatantra Kumar pronounced the judgement while hearing the plea filed by the Chairman of the All-India Anti-Terrorist Front.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had warned all state governments to ensure tamper-free high security number plates in vehicles, directing them to implement the scheme within four weeks.
