New Delhi: The BJP high command on Friday announced to appoint party general secretary Vijay Goel as the Delhi unit chief. Goel will replace Vijendra Gupta who has completed his tenure as the Delhi BJP president.

Besides Goel, Harsh Vardhan, Jagdish Mukhi, Karan Singh Tanwar, Arti Mehra were lobbying hard for the post of BJP’s Delhi unit chief. Political observers say that the party’s decision to appoint Goel is unlikely to sail through the upcoming assembly elections.

It was Vijendra Gupta’s tenure as Delhi BJP chief when party returned to power in civic polls last year. Despite, BJP’s Delhi unit has been reshuffled. After Nitin Gadkari’s unceremonious exit as the BJP president, political corridor was abuzz with change of guard in party’s Delhi unit.

However, Goel has been asked to take all the factions in confidence while taking decisions. Sources said that it was made clear to newly appointed Delhi BJP chief that the decision has nothing to do with chief ministerial candidate.

Goel, a former Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, has also served as BJP's Delhi unit chief. Goel has been raising voices against the Central and Delhi government on several issues.
