New Delhi: After Ram Jethmalani, another senior BJP leader Vinay Katiyar has sparked controversy by supporting the former’s comments on Lord Ram, the protagonist in the epic ‘Ramayana’ and one of the most sacred deities of Hindus.

Backing the comments of senior party leader Ram Jethmalani on Lord Ram, Katiyar on Friday said that he agrees with the views of his party colleague that Ram was a bad husband as he abandoned his wife Sita when she was pregnant.

Katiyar, who was one of the fire brand leaders of Ram Temple movement in late 80s and early 90s, has drawn severe criticism from the Hindu society.

Terming the comments as unfortunate, Satyendra Das, chief priest of Ramlala Temple in Ayodhya, said, “Such statements cannot be expected by such a senior leader. The leader must apologise for his insane remarks”.

While addressing a gathering at a book launch on man-woman relationship, Jethmalani on Thursday had said, “Ram was a bad husband. I don't like him at all. Just because some washerman said something against Sita, Ram sent his wife on exile and that too when she was pregnant."

He also took a jibe at Lakshman by saying he was even worse.

"When Sita was abducted, Ram asked him to go and find her as she was abducted during his watch. But Lakshman simply refused to do so saying she was his sister-in-law and he never looked at her face, so he wouldn't be able to identify her", the veteran lawyer turned politician said.

Jethmalani’s remark has evoked criticism from all quarters with the Hindu saints and clerics demanding his immediate apology.

The controversial remark on such a sensitive issue by a senior leader can be a matter of huge embarrassment to the BJP which spearheaded the Ram Temple movement. The party is still pursuing Hindutva as its main agenda and Ram is considered to be a Hindu icon. The incident is even more serious for BJP as party president Nitin Gadkari had recently made an equally contentious remark by equating the IQ levels of Swami Vivekananda with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

However, no BJP leader or RSS member has reacted on this issue till now.
