Meerut: Tension prevailed in Qazipur village after members of two communities clashed on Sunday after a Muslim cleric was roughed up by few people in a mosque.

According to police, “At least 30 people, including 10 policemen were injured in the violence. Seventeen people have been detained.
As the news spread, panic gripped the adjoining areas with members of both communities indulging in vandalism, arson and stone pelting. Members of the warring groups also set a police outpost on fire.

Protestors torched several commercial establishments and roadways buses.  Several people took to streets protesting the attack on the cleric.

Tension prevailed in some of the affected areas. Police have stepped up patrolling in the sensitive areas.

Imam Iqrar Ahmed was teaching students on Sunday when six youths entered the premises of the mosque. They manhandled him, snatched the religious text from children and threw it away. The miscreants have been absconding since then.

Members of the protesting group demanded the arrest of accused. Police have registered a complaint against the errant youth and raided their home. They were found absconding till the reports last came in.
