Shimla: Under attack from the opposition on charges of corruption and forgery, former Union Minister Virbhadra Singh on Wednesday threatened to file defamation suit against those indulging in his "character assassination".

Lashing out BJP leader Arun Jaitley for making allegations of forgery, money laundering and income tax evasion against him, Singh said," Jaitley should worry more about his national President who is in a sham today. Jaitley should divert his attention towards him rather than poor Virbhadra Singh."

"I reserve my right...I will take legal action. I will sue. I will file defamation suits...let them be prepared to face the consequences of false allegations. My biggest asset is my honour, my dignity," Singh said here.

"I cannot allow any Tom, Dick and Harry to point fingers at my character, my honesty and my integrity," he said, adding that the allegations amounted to his character assassination.

Referring to the BJP attack on him in the midst of the election campaign, the former Chief Minister said "this shows the frustration of the BJP at the national level because of its defeat.... BJP is on the backfoot due to the Congress campaign. It is going on the backfoot each passing day and due to this they are getting upset, which is obvious."

The Himachal PCC chief said, "Instead of raising political issues, they are casting personal allegations against me."

Clarifying on the revised Income Tax return filed by him, he said he has every right to do so.

"I have done nothing wrong. I can say categorically that I have my other income to be negligible. My entire income is from horticulture. Since I was in politics, earlier I was not able to manage my properly. I was unable to market my property properly. So I was suffering a loss," he said.

Singh said BJP was on the backfoot due to the Congress campaign steered by him and thus the personal attacks on him.

"My capacity to steer the party to victory is known to one and all and the BJP leaders are targeting me alone as I have vowed to oust the BJP and bring Congress back to power in Himachal," he told reporters.

The Congress leader accused Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal of having set a wrong precedent of political vendetta in Himachal and for vitiating the atmosphere.

"He became Chief Minister twice and he tried to book me in fabricated cases and I came out clean from the court.... If I wanted I could have filed so many cases against him based on facts. But I did not do so.

"I did not want Himachal to become another Tamil Nadu or another Punjab, where after every election the party coming to power starts filing cases against the previous government," he said.

Adopting an aggressive posture, he said the BJP, which has been "conspiring" against him, especially brought its senior leader Arun Jaitley to attack him and said that legal options are open to him and he would make all those responsible for sinister campaign against him accountable after the polls.

"I respect Jaitley because he is a senior leader but he has no experience of elections," he said.

Denying any knowledge of "VBS" initials entry of Ispat pay offs, he trashed the attempts of the BJP to link it with his income from orchards and his revised income tax returns and said that he was answerable to Income Tax department and would reply to all their queries.

He denied have forged any document of signing any back dated agreement and said that he has signed two agreements for his two orchards, one with Bishambar Dass and another with Anand Chauhan for managing his orchard.

"The money deposited by Chauhan in the bank account is my money from income accrued from the orchards and Chauhan is only being paid Commission," he said.
