New Delhi: Delhi and Uttar Pradesh saw a warm day on Thursday but rains followed in the evening, bringing relief from the heat. Some showers are also likely on Friday.

The maximum temperature during the day was two notches above average at 33.7 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature early on Thursday was two notches below average at 16 degrees Celsius.

But in a sudden change, it became cloudy in the evening and rain with thunderstorm occurred around 6 pm, with a few areas in east Delhi witnessing hail.

The rain caused some traffic snarls, with roads to the satellite towns of Gurgaon and Noida witnessing long pileups. Long lines at traffic signals were also witnessed in areas of west Delhi, near the heavily populated Patel Nagar and Shadipur.

"I was caught off guard by the sudden rain when I was on my way from Gurgaon to Delhi. There was a long jam on the toll road, but the change in weather is welcome," said Shahid Siddiqui.

The weatherman has forecast sporadic rainfall for Friday as well.

"The sky will be partly cloudy Friday. Rainfall and thundery developments will occur in some areas," said an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official.

The IMD attributed the rain to western disturbances, accompanied by low pressure over Rajasthan.

"A western disturbance is there, and a low pressure area has developed over Rajasthan. Enough moisture is being supplied from the Arabian Sea due to the low pressure, and cloud development is over all of north-west India," the official said.

The sudden turn in the weather has been attributed to a western depression developing over Pakistan which has led to cloudy skies in the state capital and some rains in other parts of the state.

The regional meteorological office's director JP Gupta said that breeze at an average speed of 12 to 18 km per hour had resulted in a considerable drop in day temperatures. The minimum temperature in Lucknow was recorded at 14 degrees Celsius while the maximum hovered around 30 degrees.

Varanasi recorded a minimum temperature of 13 degrees, Allahabad of 14.5 degrees and Kanpur remained pleasant at 14 degrees Celsius.
