Madhopur (Pathankot): Even as Punjab is facing drought-like condition, thousands of cusecs of water is going to Pakistan daily unchecked as two sluice gates of Madhopur headworks are broken and water is being released into Ravi river.

Irrigation Department officials, in charge of its maintenance said the gates could not be repaired due to shortage of funds.

Department insiders said Madhopur headworks gate number 11 was broken about 20 days ago and gate number three has not been repaired for the last six months. As a result, release of water in Ravi going to Pakistan cannot be controlled.

Similarly, the other gates at Beas link canal needs repairs and this could cause flood in canals in case water release was not controlled in case of heavy rains upstream.

When contacted, SDO B R Sharma said the department needs about Rs 1.50 crore funds for the repairs and had sent estimates to senior department officals but no funds have been released so far and repairs could not commence.
