Kolkata (JPN/ Bureau): The dates of state Assembly polls in West Bengal are likely to be announced next month. Political groups here have dropped hints that the Central Election Commission (CEC) may announce the poll dates in the first or second week of March.

Though the CEC has not yet spelt out the dates for Assembly polls in Bengal, sources said the Commission is waiting for the Railway Budget and Budget, following which it would declare the dates in March.

In view of the coming Assembly elections, various political parties are gearing up to decide the strategy before beginning the campaign. The leaders of the ruling party and Opposition have begun holding deliberations with district magistrates to finalise the list of candidates. The Left party is expected to declare the list of its candidates for the Assembly polls in the first week of March.

Due to the differences between Congress and Trinmool over seats, there may be a delay again for the announcement of list of candidates. While the Congress is demanding 98 seats against 294 seats of Legislative Assembly, Trinmool, on the other hand, is not ready to give more than 50 seats.

Congress MP Deepa Dasmunshi said, “The list for 92 seats has been given to the Central government.”

The BJP has also given indications to fight elections for all the seats.  State general secretary of Janta Dal United (JDU) Yashwant Singh said that talks are on in the party for deciding upon the seats.

In view of security concerns, the elections in West Bengal are likely to be held in five-six phases.
