Kolkata: In an attempt to facilitate direct recruitment for state government employees, the West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday passed The West Bengal Staff Selection Bill, 2011.

The bill was introduced by the State Minister for Public Health Engineering (PHE), Subrata Mukherjee, in the absence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Parth Chhaterjee in the Assembly.

While raising his views on the bill in the assembly, Mukherjee said that the bill was essential in bringing transparency in the recruitment process and facilitating the selection of government employees.

He further said that under the new legislation, a new body, West Bengal Staff Selection Commission, would be set up which will carry the recruitment of state government employees.

The commission will select the eligible candidates thorough state-level examination. The qualified candidates will be recruited for various posts in different government departments.
Leader of the Opposition Surya Kanta Mishra said the new legislation would undermine the role of Public Service Commission (PSC).
