Kolkata: The West Bengal government on Friday submitted before the Calcutta High Court that Singur Rehabilitation and Development Act, 2011 is purely constitutional and it has been prepared within the provisions of the Constitution.

Defending the state government, Advocate General Anindya Mitra argued before the single bench comprising Justice IP Mukherjee that the State Assembly is well within its rights to make new laws for land acquisition.

Mitra argued that the land has been acquired by the government for development.

Replying to the contention of Tata Motors Limited, the Advocate General said that the TML kept the land unused despite agreement of setting up an industrial plant.

The matter would come up for hearing again on Monday. Shakti Nath Mukherjee will represent the state government in the court.
