Kolkata: The West Bengal government on Friday made it mandatory for all taxies to install electronic meter before March 31, 2012.

The state government took the decision in the wake of High Court order which had sought mandatory installation of electronic meters in all the taxies plying in the metro city.
Through a communiqué, the government has stated if someone found violating the order, the Department of Transport would not update the papers of vehicle and also disallow them no objection certificate. 

The state government on Friday informed the High Court about its move.

Few months back, a petition was filed in the Calcutta High Court raising the issue. At that time High Court had asked the state government as to why electronic meters are not installed in taxies?
