Lucknow: Launching a scathing attack on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati over the recent removal of tainted ministers from the Cabinet, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said that the CM is trying to befool the people and termed the step as a political stunt to retain her hold in Assembly elections.

“After indulging in corruption for five years, she is now trying to distract the attentions of voters by removing the tainted ministers from the government. Was she not aware of their involvement in corruption in the last five years?" asked Gandhi while addressing a public meeting in Lakhimpur Kheri.

Highlighting the Congress’ contribution in bringing quota for the Muslims, he said, “We have considered the Sachar Committee’s report and introduced reservation for Muslims to empower them. And now when the elections are approaching, the BSP supremo is playing political gimmicks over it to grab votes.”

Expressing serious concerns over the dismal condition of farmers in the state, he said, “Atrocities against farmers is unacceptable. We will provide financial assistance to the farmers to ameliorate their situation.”

The people of UP is suffering from bad governance in the state and want a change, he added and said, “They will vote for a pro-development party and not the one which is encouraging corruption in the state.”

Gandhi said that he was not here merely to win elections. "I am here to change UP and I will not move out until it changes," he said.
