Kottayam: Kerala Finance Minister K M Mani on Wednesday said he would recommend to the President that the two nurses who died battling the December 9 blaze at a Kolkata hospital be honoured.

He stated this at a function got up here to distribute Rs five lakh each to the families of the two nurses. Their mothers received the amount.

The Minister also assured them that that the state government would give a job to one of their family members.

The Minister also gave Rs one lakh to another woman who was injured in the fire.

Remya and Vineetha, both aged 24, pulled out eight of nine patients in a smoke filled female ward at AMRI hospital in Kolkata, which was ravaged by a fire on December 9, killing 93 people. The two nurses succumbed to the smoke and heat when they returned to save the ninth patient who had suffered a fracture.
