The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister had last week written to the Prime Minister seeking his personal intervention in securing release of Prem Kumar.
Noting that Father Alexis Prem Kumar, hailing from Dindigul district, was on a ‘humanitarian mission’ in Afghanistan when he was kidnapped, she wrote, “The incident has caused considerable anxiety to his family and friends in Tamil Nadu”.
“There is a fear that his life may be in mortal danger”, she wrote in her letter.
“Hence I would be grateful if you could kindly intervene personally and take up the matter at the highest level in Afghanisthan so that the local authorities redouble their efforts to secure the safe and early release of Father Alexis Prem Kumar”, she said.
Earlier, DMK chief M Karunanidhi and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) chief Vaiko had also urged the Central Government to secure the release of the abducted aid worker.
One person has been so far arrested by Afghan security forces in connection with the abduction of Prem Kumar.
“The government will spare no effort to ensure safe release of the abducted aid worker,” the Prime Minister told Jayalalithaa.
