New Delhi:  After observing a nine day fast at Jantar Mantar and facing government apathy, members of Team Anna will end their fast in the evening on Friday at 5 pm. This comes after Team Anna on Thursday made a baffling announcement of providing a political alternative to the country.

Team Anna leaders, including Anna Hazare, will end their fast in presence of Army Chief VK Singh.  V.K. Singh, who exposed corruption in the army, will arrive at Jantar Mantar at 4 p.m. and offer water to the fasting members shortly after that, Team Anna member Prashant Bhushan said.

Amidst growing appeal from eminent personalities like General (Retd.) VK Singh, former Chief Election Commissioner JM Lyngdoh, senior journalist Kuldip Nayar, film actor Anupam Kher and Justice Santosh Hegde, Team Anna agreed to end their week long fast on Friday evening.

The demonstrators, who staged protest at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar which started a week ago in support of Lokpal, have also supported the idea of a viable political alternative to the people of the country.

The announcement in this regard was made on Thursday by Anna Hazare and his close associate Arvind Kejriwal. Anna Hazare has made it clear that he will personally not contest elections but will work to pick candidates with clean image. He also mentioned that people have promised him not to vote on the basis of caste, money and religion. He also said that he would present a political alternative based on the principles of democracy, secularism and devolution of power.

The decision to end fast came when prominent Indians from various walks of life appealed to Anna Hazare and his lieutenants to offer a political alternative before the nation instead of sacrificing their precious lives. They had said that the present dispensation at the centre had proved to be totally unresponsive to their demands for strong and effective anti-corruption ombudsman.

Former Army Chief General (Retd.) VK Singh had said that the government and the opposition, both are equally responsible for delaying the passage of strong Lokpal for which Team Anna is fasting.
