Kolkata: In a first of its kind initiative to honour women achievers in different creative disciplines, the general public will vote through text messages and the internet to pick up the recipients of 'BIG Salute to Bangla Women Entertainers Awards.'

Woman entertainers across eight different genres Movies, Television, Music, Media, Dance, Sports and Theatre, will be voted by the public through both SMS and internet platforms and social media after the nomination by a select jury panel.

Veteran actor Barun Chanda, one of the three jury members, said the initiative would undoubtedly inspire the working woman.

"The achievers we have zeroed in are also working women, celebrity or otherwise. So the aspiring danseuse, actor, sportsperson, singer and likewise will certainly get a big boost by the success story of her role model," Chanda, the company executive in Satyajit Ray's Seemabaddha said on Sunday.

Eminent danseuse Alokananda Roy, another jury member, said the women achiever may "also include one having made great contribution to her respective field but not sharing so much fame." Roy, whose 'dance therapy' among correctional home inmates has earned lots of acclaim with Tagore dance drama 'Balmiki Prathiba' being staged in many places, advocated such awards to set right the unequal status given to women for years.

"Such an award will celebrate the incredible success of the Indian women in recent years," she said.

The awards will have three categories- young, adult and senior, across the segments, covering all age groups and having a vast profile of viewers, a spokesperson of BIG Live, said.

The jury identified nomination list will be open to audiences for voting through the company’s radio vertical 92.7 BIG FM, utilising different platforms for participation of a wide cross section of society and especially females of all ages across malls, colleges, housing estates, the spokesperson said.

The jury panel also comprised public relations practitioner Rita Bhimani.

"These awards will have high appeal as people will get to see their local women entertainers on this pedestal achieving recognition," the spokesperson said.

Big Live is an arm of Reliance Broadcast Network Limited a multi-media entertainment conglomerate.
