During the conference on ‘Swach Bharat Mission’, ministers from all the states would discuss over the issue of women defecating in open in the country. The Ministry of Water Resources has made a note on this.

Stressing on the need of good hygiene and cleanliness, the ministry has pinpointed at the need to provide toilets to each and every citizen of the country.

The ministry is of the opinion that clean and secure toilets would make life better for women in the country.

If each and every women in the country are provided proper toilets then they won’t need to relieve themselves in the open and it would also help them maintain their dignity.

The government believes that in case of women who are going through periods and pregnancy and those who are in post-delivery stage, the situation worsens for them due to the paucity of proper toilets.

The ministry note says that it is not only important to avoid situations where a woman is forced to defecate in open but proper sanitation facilities is also equally vital to uphold their self-esteem.

Sanitation facilities for women should be made available both at their homes as well as in the public space. This is important for their physical health as well as psychological wellbeing.

It is important to note that Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day speech had related the need of good sanitation facilities for women to their self-esteem.

Modi in his speech had put weight on the need to arrange good sanitation facilities for women in the country.

Modi had stressed that if every school has proper toilets are available then the total number of girl children attending the school will ultimately go up, helping them complete their studies.

As per the note, around 59 crore people living in rural areas of the country are still forced to defecate openly and this situation needs to change.

The ministry also accepts that there are several rural areas where the villagers still chose to defecate openly in fields despite the presence of proper toilets and such bad habits of the people need to be changed.
