Lucknow: The turnout of women voters in the recently concluded four phases of Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, held in 40 districts, is higher than that of men. While 60.8 percent women cast their vote, the turnout percentage of men was registered at 55.88 percent.

Chief election officer Umesh Sinha said, “Out of 40 districts, 11 recorded more than 60 percent of polling. Some constituencies in Sitapur district registered a turnout of 66 to 70 percent which is the highest.”

Barabanki,  Ambedkar Nagar, Sravasti, Maharajganj, Mirzapur, Lucknow, Faizabad, Hardoi, Rae Bareli, Fatehpur and Chitrakoot are some other districts where 60 percent polling was recorded.

As women and youngsters came out in large numbers to vote, the fourth phase of the UP assembly elections alone recorded 57.20 percent voter turnout, which is the highest poll percentage in any phase.

Now, with the mammoth poll exercise crossing the halfway mark, it seems likely that the high voting trend will be maintained in the remaining three phases, and there will be an even larger participation of women voters.
