Kartarpur (Jalandhar): Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Saturday said Punjab government would soon start construction of Rs 100 crore memorials dedicated to the memory of freedom fighters.

Badal visited the site of the proposed 'Jang-E-Azaadi' memorial and held a meeting with key officials to expedite the process of starting work on this project.

The chief minister said the memorial would be built on 25 acres of land near NH-1 so that people can visit the memorial and pay homage to the freedom fighters.

He said the "state-of-the-art" memorial would be a humble but fitting tribute to the great heroes and martyrs who had laid down their lives for the country.

During the deliberations, Badal was apprised that as per his directions, the land belonging to the state government had been transferred to the Tourism and Culture department for the construction of the memorial.

He said members of the concept committee constituted for the memorial had recently visited Cellular Jail at Port Blair in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Sabarmati Ashram at Ahmadabad, Akshardham Temple at Gandhinagar in Gujarat, among other places to seek vital inputs for the design of the memorial.
