WHO, founded on April 7, 1948, is a working body under the United Nations with its headquarter in Geneva.

Since its inception, the organization has played a major role in addressing health issues globally like polio, smallpox and chickenpox etc.

The organization also releases the World Health report every year giving an account of overall health of people in UN member nations.

The decision to celebrate April 7 as the World Health Day was taken at the first conference of WHO in 1948 in Geneva.

Different government organizations and NGOs help in raising awareness among people towards health issues on the day.

Each year a theme is selected for World Health Day that highlights a priority area of public health concern in the world. The theme for 2013 was high blood pressure.

The focus of the World Health Day in 2012 was increasing life expectancy.
