Speaking on the occasion Rajesh Kumar, Former Commissioner, Central Water Commission cited a report by United Nations World Water Assessment Program, and said at current usage rates, the world will have 40 percent less fresh water than it needs in 15 years.

He said increased urbanization and uncontrolled population growth are the major factors contributing to water shortage and crisis.

"Lack of water availability also affects the agriculture sector of the country. The world is not only suffering from a water crisis but also from water contamination which has resulted in rise of various water borne diseases," he said.     

He encouraged students to work towards spreading awareness about water conservation and sustainable growth.

March 22 is observed as World Water Day.
