Momoi died of chronic kidney failure at a hospital in Tokyo on July 5. Momoi, who lived in Saitama city near Tokyo, was recognised by Guinness as the oldest man in August 2014, a news agency reported.

Following his death, Yasutaro Koide, a 112-year-old man residing in Japan's Moriyama-ku, Nagoya, has become the oldest man in Japan, according to the Health, Labour and Welfare Ministry.

Misao Okawa, a Japanese woman recognised as the world's oldest person, died at the age of 117 in Osaka in April.
