In order to attain Lord Shiva as her consort, Devi Parvati underwent hard penance due to which her body colour turned dark. Mahadev accepeted her devotion and washed her body with pure Ganga water because of which her body turned white as milk. She thus fetched herself the name of Maha Gauri, meaning extremely white.

This form of Durga depicts purity. It is believed that Devi Mahagauri removes all the dirt and dark scrum from the heart of her worshippers. The invocation of this form of Devi makes the worshipper pious.
