Xiaomi Mi 3, which goes on sale starting July 22, has 5-inch display, 2.3GHz quad-core processor, 2GB RAM and Android KitKat OS with Xiaomi's proprietary MIUI skin on top, 16GB internal storage, 13MP rear camera, 2MP front camera and a 3,050mAh battery.
The Xiaomi Redmi 1S features a 4.7-inch display, powered by a 1.6GHz quad-core processor and 1GB RAM. It comes with 16GB internal storage (expandable up to 64GB). With 2,000 mAh battery, it has 8MP rear camera and 1.6MP front camera.
The Redmi Note phablet sports a 5.5-inch display, 1.7GHz MediaTek octa-core processor and 2GB RAM. It comes with 8GB internal storage (expandable up to 32GB), 3100 mAh battery, 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera. The two phones will be available in August.
Xiaomi has decided to take the online route for selling its products and has partnered ecommerce major, Flipkart, a move earlier made by Motorola. Xiaomi plans to start selling phones on its own website in the near future as well.
Xiaomi: A threat to smartphone makers in India?
Xiaomi, also known as Apple of China, may pose serious threat to India’s mobile phone market in the coming days, the experts have said.
According to the company, India has the potential to become its largest market outside of its home ground in the next few years.
"We see India as a huge opportunity for us and are excited about bringing Mi products to this market. We have just started here but India has the potential to be our largest market outside of China, maybe next year," Xiaomi Global vice-president Hugo Barra said.
The company will pitch its devices against the likes of Motorola, Samsung and Nokia as well as domestic players like Micromax to grab a share of the multi-billion smartphone opportunity in India.
Barra said the company will not look at spending big on advertising and marketing but instead focus on social media to spread the word.
Asked how the firm manages to make its phones affordable, Barra said there is a three-pronged strategy.
"We have a different cost structure. Right from designing to component procurement to distribution, we manage it all. We hardly have any marketing spend and we go to the consumer directly, like online to cut distribution costs. We would want to pass the benefit onto the consumer," he added.
"We are looking to provide the best in class experience to our Mi fans in India. We are starting with 36 service centres across top 20 cities with two exclusive Mi centres in Delhi and Bangalore," he added.
Other Chinese firms selling its handsets in India include Huawei, ZTE, Lenovo, Gionee and Oppo, the latest entrant.
According to Xiaomi co-founder and President Bin Lin, the company's revenues grew 150 per cent to USD 5.2 billion with sales of 18.7 million handsets (higher by 160 percent over 2012).
In H1 2014, the company claims to have already sold over 26 million handsets and expects to close 2014 with sales of 60 million smartphones and USD 11-13 billion in revenues.
The firm, which also sells 4K Ultra HD televisions, sound bars and power banks, will also looking at bringing these products to the Indian market in the coming months.
According to research firm IDC, smartphone sales in the country grew almost three-fold to over 44 million in 2013, buoyed by affordable devices made by local firms such as Micromax and Karbonn.
In the first quarter of 2014, 17.59 million smartphones were shipped into India as compared with 6.14 million in the same period of 2013.
Samsung was the market leader in the category with 35 percent market share in Q1, followed by Micromax (15 percent), Karbonn (10 percent), LAVA (6 percent) and Nokia (4 percent). Affordable smartphones, especially those priced in the sub-USD 200 category (Rs 12,000), are doing well.
