Greater Noida: With Assembly elections round the corner, Uttar Pradesh Government has decided to speed up the construction work on the Yamuna Expressway and review it every month.

The 165km Expressway is expected to be operational by March 2012. The state government is hoping to inaugurate the ambitious project before the implementation of model code of conduct for elections in the state.

The Yamuna Expressway project which was initiated in 2001 had been surrounded by controversies right after the change of the ruling government.

On investigation, no irregularities were found in the construction of the project. When the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) again came to power in 2007, the construction work resumed and the target was fixed that construction work would complete by 2013.

Thereafter, the project was hit by violent protest of farmers over the land acquisition issue; which delayed the construction work for another six months.

Meanwhile, the state government has now decided to complete the construction by December 2011 instead of 2013.

The elevated 165 km Yamuna Expressway corridor would daily benefit an estimated 1.2 lakh commuters heading towards Agra and beyond.
