New Delhi: This could be bad tidings for the Delhiites who are residing in low-lying areas along Yamuna in East Delhi, as the river has started swelling owing to the release of huge amount of water from Haryana.

According to Delhi government officials, the release of around 43 thousand cusecs of water by Haryana into the Yamuna from its Hathini Kund barrage has resulted in flood-like situation in certain colonies.

The river is flowing above the danger mark in the wake of discharge of 6.22 lakh cusecs of water from Hathini Kund barrage on Tuesday.

Sensing the flood-like situation in the low-lying areas of the national capital, the government has prepared in advance to rescue people lying along the bank.

Claiming the situation is under control, Flood Control Minister A K Walia said, "I would request people not to panic,Yamuna water level will gradually recede."

He said that the river had crossed the danger level of 204.83 metres on Wednesday and it has been flowing above the danger mark.

“The water releases from Hathnikund barrage will take time to reach Delhi. And by that time the Water level will come down”, he added.

He informed that the central flood control phone number - 011-22051234 in the SDM office in Gandhi Nagar is working 24/7.

The Irrigation and Flood Control Department has also introduced a control panel. The contact numbers of the panel are 011-23861837, 23868773 and 23861838.
