The incident happened at around 9.56 am when Niladri Dutta, a resident of Kharagpur, allegedly jumped in front of an approaching Dumdum-bound metro train and died on the spot, a senior officer of Kolkata Police said.

Niladri was waiting with his father at the Rabindra Sarobar Metro station to board a Dumdum-bound train to Central Metro station, the officer said.

The youth, an MBA, was suffering from various illness for which he was depressed for a long time, the officer cited.

"Today he was going to College Street with his father to get a customised belt that doctor prescribed him because he was putting on weight. His father was standing beside him and could not guess his son's plan of taking such fatal step," he said.

The Metro authorities immediately went in for power block to recover the body of the person. However Up and down trains were operational from Dumdum to Maidan and from New Garia to Tollygunge.

"It took some time for us to recover the body from the tracks and at around 11.13 AM train services were back to normal," Kolkata Metro CPRO Indrani Banerjee said.
